Screening of different strains of rhizobia on soybean, mungbean and peanut under Zamboanga del Sur conditions [Philippines]

A field experiment on evaluating the effect of rhizobial strains and phosphorus fertilizer on soybean, mungbean and peanut yield and nodule formation was conducted at Betinan Research Station [Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines] during the 1985 wet season. The effect of five strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and P fertilizer on the grain yield of soybean was very apparent when compared to the uninoculated control plots. Soybean treated with USDA 110 strain recorded the highest grain yield of 2.2 t/ha. However, there was no significant differences among other strains used and plots applied with ammonium phosphate. Strains BGM 9 demonstrated the highest nodule count of 52.13 and USDA 110 has the highest nodule infection of 98.75% by serological typing from among the strains tested. The use of Rhizobium sp. on mungbean obtained insignificant differences on grain yield. Strain M6 got the highest nodule count, whereas, peanut inoculated with P3 obtained significant result on pod yield from two strains (RP 182-13 and NC 92) used and the untreated control. The increase in yield could be achieved through effective inoculum strain which was interrelated to the application of NP (ammonium phosphate) fertilizer alone.
