Influence of light and nitrogen application on the development of Arachis hypogaea cv. BPI-9 [Philippines]

This study was conducted to investigate the growth and developmental responses of peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L. cv. BPI-9) to light and nitrogen application. Obtained results showed that root development and nodulation were reduced by shading and further decreases were most marked during the stages of fruit development. Shading reduced stem growth and branch production but enhanced shoot elongation. Leaf development and total leaf chlorophyll content were also increased under shaded conditions apparently as an adaptive mechanism of the plant under conditions of reduced light intensity. These morphological alterations favored more luxuriant vegetative development in shaded plants but reduced the development of reproductive structures. Flowering and fruiting were reduced by 29.4% and 4.0% under shaded conditions, respectively. Partitioning of assimilates for fruit development was reduced in shaded plants and, consequently, its harvest index was decreased. The application of urea nitrogen did not significantly affect the vegetative and reproductive development of the plant in most observation dates except for taproot elongation, nodule weight, leaf dry matter and flowering and pegging which were enhanced by nitrogen application generally during fruit development periods. Under the conditions of the experiment, the yield potential of the peanut plant was more seriously affected by shading than by nitrogen application.
