1987
Manuel, J.S. (Philippines Univ., Los Banos, College, Laguna (Philippines). Dept. of Agronomy)
The morphological and physiological characteristics of Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell, a small floating aquatic fern, that relate to its high potential as a problem species in paddy rice culture are briefly reviewed. Its rapid spread to different countries of the tropics and sub-tropics is also traced. The paper concludes with an account of its introduction and rate of spread in the Philippines. Available data that illustrates its potential as a problem species together with relevant research activity currently being undertaken to counter its further spread and manage it where it is already established are also briefly discussed.
