Water use efficiency and drought resistance of different cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars

A greenhouse experiment to determine the water use efficiency (WUE) of eight cotton cultivars and the relationship of WUE to other morpho-physiological characters under different soil water depletion was conducted at the Department of Agronomy, Philippines Univ., Los Banos [College, Laguna, Philippines] from May to October, 1987. Soil moisture stress significantly reduced total leaf area per plant, total dry weight, plant height, and yield both in terms of seed cotton and lint, leaf water potential, relative water content, water loss and stomatal opening. It also delayed boll opening and increased root-shoot ratio. Of the eight cotton varieties used, UPL Ct-2, Fam BE, Allen 3357 and Deltapine 90 were more efficient in the utilization of water in all sampling periods. These varieties also had higher leaf area, total dry weight, leaf water potential, relative water content and lint yield under different soil water depletion. At 60% soil water deficit, stomatal aperture of UPL Ct-2, Fam 13 BE and Deltapine 90 remained unaffected. However, at 80% depletion, a decrease in stomatal opening was observed in all varieties. Leaf water potential was higher in younger plants and this was positively and linearly related to relative water content. Positive corellation was also observed between WUE and net assimilation rate, WUE and relative growth rate, WUE and leaf area, and WUE and leaf water potential
