Partly fertile sesquidiploids were obtained after crossing PVY-susceptible Nicotiana tabacum cv. BP-210 tetraploid with PVY-resistant N. benavidessi. They were backcrossed as females to diploid BP-210 and in the resulting BC1F1 generation some individuals were found to be PVY-resistant. The PVY-free plants were selfed and in two of the BC1F2 progenies segregation for resistance to PVY was observed. In the BC1F2 generation 11 progenies showed full resistance to PVY. Although not proved concusively, segmental substitution was to likeliest mechanism through which the transfer was accomplished. Based on testing for PVY-resistance in the F1, F2 and BC1 generations of the hybrid between the resistant form and the susceptible recurrent parent the N. benavidessi-derived resistance was found to be semi-dominant and monogenic
