Influence of light on root formation in larch (Larix europaea D.C.) cuttings

The cuttings collected from 2-year-old mother tree were rooted in growth chambers in the following growth conditions; photoperiod 16 h and 8 h, light intensity 78 W-2, relative humidity of air 70-80 percent, day temperature 20 degrees C and night temperature 15 degrees C. Peat with sand was used in proportion 1:2. IAA or IBA /0.1 percent in talc/ were used as rooting promotors. The rooting process was estimated 3 months after planting. The rooting rate, number, and length of roots were determined. It was proved that photoperiodicity had a significant effect on rooting: for 16-hour photoperiod the rooting rate was much higher than for 8-hour photoperiod. In both cases the application of auxins enhanced rooting process and increased the number of roots. The experiment proved that photoperiodicity and light intensity were strictly correlated.
