Effect of shelterbelts of different form and structure on snow cover formation
1988
Gorka, W. (Instytut Badawczy Lesnictwa, Warszawa (Poland). Zaklad Nasiennictwa i Selekcji)
The studies had been conducted in nine shelterbelts during three winter seasons. The quantities of snow and distribution of snow cover depended on structure and direction of woodlands and on topography and vegetation. Woodlands can be divided, according to the efficacy of snow maintenance, into: 1. woodlands maintaining 50 percent of snow - scrub belts, spruce tree belts perpendicular to wind direction; 2. woodlands maintaining 25-50 percent of snow - old tree alleys with dense belt of scrubs perpendicular to wind direction; 3. woodlands maintaining less than 25 percent of snow - scrub belts perpendicular to wind direction, young alley - type woodlands perpendicular to wind direction
