Water and salt balance in saline soil ecosystem at amphoe Kham Thale So, Changwat Nakhon Ratchasima [Thailand]

Results indicated that distribution of Na, Ca, Mg and Cl at site 1 were highest at the bottom land and lowest at the ridge top areas. Quantity of salts accumulated in this area appeared to be highest in the wet period. At the site 2, the amount of Na, Ca, Mg and Cl were found accumulated in the topsoil (depth 0-50 cm) in higher amount than that in the subsoil (depth 51-100 cm). The shortage of soil moisture and excess water to leach the salts out of system due to higher potential evapotranspiration than amount of annual rainfall was the main factor affecting the salt balance in this area. Annual budget estimation for soil depth of 0-100 cm indicated loss more than gain in the first site but the second site showed the opposite result. The salt balance obtained from both sites also implied that salts in sloping area were washed out and transported by ways of leaching and erosion processes and finally deposited and accumulated at downslope areas. Salt concentrations at the botton land was higher than those on sloping sites. Besides, capillary action caused higher salt concentration in nearly flat area, salt boiling process operated by local villagers created additional salt accumulation in this site.
