A rapid and quantitative test for Dextran
1988
Clarke, S.J. (Louisiana State Univ., Louisiana (USA). Audubon Sugar Institute)
Adverse weather conditions at harvest have often produced unacceptable levels of dextran in cane delivered to Louisiana factories. A quick, simple and effective procedure to measure the dextran content of juice expressed from cane samples taken from individual loads would be of considerable benefit to the industry. The paper describes such a method using polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies. After mixing the antibody solution with filtered juice the turbidity is measured. Dextran measurements by the antibody methods are compared with the results obtained by the haze method and the ASI-II method. Results are encouraging and methods for other factory products including massecuites and molasses are being developed.
