Sugar cane as a basis for successful agricultural diversification in Barbados
1988
Boer de, H.G. (Barbados Sugar Industry Limited, Bridgetown (Barbados). Agronomy Research Unit)
This paper cautions against a diversification programme without sugar cane. The need for diversification is recognised, but alternative crops should be grown in rotation with sugar cane. The reason why sugar cane is such a suitable crop for Barbados is discussed in detail, considering soil, pests and diseases, weeds and climate aspects. Because of this, sugar cane must be seen as the basis of any effort to diversify agricultural production.
