Cryptocotyly in some Indian dicotyledons
1991
Deb, D.K. | Paria, N.
During germination when the cotyledons emerge from the testa, the seedlings are described as phanerocotylar, and when they do not as cryptocotylar. Out of 85 species of Indian woody dicotyledons investigated, 67 were phanerocotylar (78%) and 18 cryptocotylar (22%). Whether the cryptocotyly is a primitive or advanced trail is difficult to decide. Some are of the opinion that phanerocotyly is primitive. In the present investigation the cryptocotylar situation of 18 taxa is restricted to 14 families most of which are polypetalous a trend of primitiveness. As such, this study based on some Indian taxa provides clue to the understanding of cryptocotyly as to primitive criterion in seedling morphology.
