The impacts of water and nitrogen on yield of corn

This experiment was conducted in the rabi season of 1988-89 in silty clay loam soil of IPSA to find the interactions of different moisture and nitrogen regimes on grain yield of corn. The four moisture levels were; no irrigation (I0), allowing 65% (I1), 50% (I2) and 35% (I3) depletions of soil available water. The nitrogen doses were: 80 kg (N1) and 110 kg (N2) per hectare. Highest grain yield of 3.96 t/ha was obtained from I3 N2 plots having a total water use of 294 mm (soil moisture + irrigation + rain) which was closely followed by 3.85 t/ha I1 N2 with TWU of 237 mm. Highest yield per unit total water (YTW) and irrigation water (YIW) and irrigation water (YIW) were obtained from I1 N2 treatment (19.89 and 30.28 Kg/mm respectively). This was followed by I2 N2 (16.24 and 21.27 Kg/mm respectively). Highest grain yield per unit application of nitrogen was found in I2 N1 plot (42.50 Kg/Kg). This was followed by I3 N2 plots (38.38 and 36.00 Kg/Kg respectively). Hence, a total amount of 180 to 240 mm water (soil moisture + irrigation + rain) with 80 to 100 Kg N per hectare are needed to cultivate corn successfully in Shallow Red-Brown Soil of IPSA farm.
