Two metabolic tests were performed by the regression method on 5 + 5 animals (heifers) weighing 240 to 280 kg. Part of one batch of beans was crushed and another part was hydrothermically treated on the apparatus JET SPLODER (manufacturer: CPM Co.). 30-day growth tests were conducted under the same conditions as the metabolic tests. Partial coefficients of apparent digestibility and parameters of nutritive value for 30 per cent and 40 per cent proportions of bean dry matter out of the dry matter of the feed ration were expressed on the basis of the stated values of digestibility and calculated regression relations. Beans were included in the rations with maize silage. From the metabolic tests it was possible to express an increase of the total apparent digestibility by 1.22 per cent in organic substances and 1.5 per cent in crude protein. A 2.6 per cent increase was recorded in the value of metabolizable energy in the ration containing hydrothermically treated beans, the dry matter content of the beans being 30 per cent of the dry matter of the ration. When the proportion of bean dry matter of the ration containing hydrothermically treated beans was higher by 3.22 g N, the live weight gain was statistically significantly higher in the rations containing the treated beans, and this was so even at a high intensity of nutrition (gains 1.06 and 0.95 kg per head and day.) Feed dry matter exploitation was increased by 9.4 per cent even at a high level of nutrition. With the hydrothermic treatment of beans it is possible to reach more effective utilization of nutrition in cattle containing hydrothermically treated beans.
