Effectiveness of the root system as a barrier of translocation of lead and cadmium from the sandy substrate into the aboveground parts of barley was studied. Results confirmed the root reception of mobile forms of cadmium from sand in non-phytotoxic conditions and their translocation into the overground parts. Roots represented a significant barrier to the mobile lead translocation. The increased input of lead and cadmium into soil simultaneously represent the increased offer of mobile forms to plants. From the viewpoint of food contamination cadmium is a relatively greater risk than lead.
