Physiological studies on the mode of action of glyphosate in comparison to the effect of abscisic acid and cytokinins in Datura plant

In a pot experiment the effect of the herbicide glyphosate (N-phosponomethyl)-glycine on the growth and chemical constituents of Datura stramonium was evaluated in comparison to abscisic acid and the cytokinins (kinetin and benzyladenine). The herbicide (433 and 866 ppm) and the different growth substances each at 250 and 500 ppm, were sprayed twice at 40 and 55 days from sowing. Glyphosate and abscisic acid showed an inhibitory effect on growth. Carbohydrate (soluble and nonsoluble sugars) contents of the leaves were reduced due to glyphosate as well as other growth substance treatments except with kinetin. Glyphosate treatment caused significant reduction in chl. a, while its content increased significantly over the control with kinetin and BA treatments. The effect on carotenoid content was insignificant with all treatments.
