Conception of the long-range technical development of the Hungarian food economy [Hungary]

Szucs, I. | Papocsi, L. (Foldmuvelesugyi Miniszterium, Budapest (Hungary))
Owing to the unfavourable world market prices, the question rises whether the present level of food production should be maintained and developed under existing conditions or whether it qould not be more advisable to regroup a part of the resources engaged in agriculture to other sectors. The answer can be definitely stated that the retardation or reduction of agricultural production is not real and not justified, because the resources convertable into other sectors could hardly be released, and the substitution of the missing agricultural export incomes cannot be solved at present. To increase competitiveness, the priorized technical development of food-proessing, bound to the export strategy, is indispensable. The agricultural policy should direct the agrarien complex to a new type of development method, in which the supply-market situation will be characteristic, the market will be in the focus, the private producers will become equal in rank, the quantitative increase will be differentiated in function of the quality, and a greater stress will be laid on the more rational land use, as well as, on the more efficient labour force management and on the introduction of the less capital-intensive technologies, finally, the restricting of energy intensity is a question of primary importance.
