[Is sugar beet leaf economic as part of a diet in fattening beef cattle?]
1990
Dehghanian, S.
The beef market has a good future background. In large-scale farming systems forage production is cheap, therefore beef production becomes a compatible enterprise. Purchasing calves for semi fattening cow and early weaning with small cost is possible. Fattening these calves in pasture up to a weight of 300 kg is possible. Different experiments during 3 consecutive years on a number of these calves was done. The cost of a semi fattened cow employing this method is 100 DM cheaper than purchasing semi fattened cow. Ultimate fattening is after a period of grazing on pasture. In this period feeding fodder beef leaf silage and 4 kg concentrate per cow gives 1220 gr. live weight gain. With leaf of fodder beet 3 to 3.5 cows per hectare is fattened. Return from each cow is 527 DM. If for this purpose the opportunity cost is included, return for each ton of leaf of fodder beet is 33 DM
