Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the major agricultural crops in Libya. Important quantity of potato seeds are imported each year. This experiment has been conducted to check the occurrence of Erwinia soft rot bacteria on seeds of six imported potato varieties: Merka, Bright, Diament, Lanzer, Escort, Cardinal. Results showed that tubers of Lanzer variety were contamined with soft rot pathogen identified as Erwinia carotovora ssp. carotovora. This is the first report of the bacterium on potato in the Great Libyan Jamahiriya. It indicates the possibility of introduction of new pathogens to the Great Jamahiriya through contaminated imported potato seeds. Necessary measures must be taken to prevent the introduction of contaminated potato seeds
