Infectious diseases of grapevines: Nature, detection, sanitation and situation in the Arab countries

An account is given of the present status of virus, virus-like and viroid diseases of the grapevine (Vitis spp.) in the Mediterranean basin and the Near East, with special reference to the Arab countries. The symptomatology, possible economic impact, geographical distribution, and currently used methods for identifying these diseases are briefly reviewed. The etiological and epidemiological problems still posed by major diseases like leafroll and rugose wood are discussed also in the light of the most recent laboratory acquisitions. Possible ways of prevention and control are outlined
