A preliminary survey on tydeid mites in Lebanon (Acari: prostigmata: Tydeidae)
1987
Bayan, A. (Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research, Beirut (Lebanon))
A survey on tydeid mites done in Lebanon during 1983-1986 revealed the presence of 12 species. Samples of leaves and twigs taken from fruit and forest trees from different regions in Lebanon were checked in the Entomology laboratory (Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, AUB) by using a stereoscope. Isolated mite specimens were preserved in a solution composed of 90% ethanol (80%) and 10% lactic acid, cleared in lactic acid, mounted in a polyvinyl lactophenol medium and checked by using a light microscope. The taxonomic concept to genera of the family Tydeidae proposed by Henri Andre (Bull, Ann. Soc. r. belge Ent., 116: 103-131, 140-167, 1980) was followed. The morphology, biology and taxonomic status of tydeid mites is briefly discussed, and the distribution and habitat of listed species in Lebanon and elsewhere were cited. Orthotydeus woolleyi is transferred from the genus Paralorryia Baker, 1965 and Tydeus lolitae for Tydulosus Baker, 1965; whilst the Tydeus mali is returned to the genus Tydeus Koch, 1835 from Paralorryia as Oudemans named it for the first time in 1929
