A number of soil physical properties including; bulk density, resistance to penetration, macroporosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity and infiltration rate were measured on reconstructed profiles at the Martha Hill, New Zealand experimental site. Most commonly, comparisons were made between plots with no soil overlying waste rock and plots with 150 mm of soil over wasted rock. Pasture was grown on the soil but not grazed. Data collected indicates that at the site both wasted rock and overlying soil were good physical media for plant root growth due to relatively large macroporosities which encourage root proliferation and rapid removal of excess water. Of major concern are the changes to the physical properties which are likely to result from grazing
