The role of evapo-transpiration seepage (ETS) in on-site wastewater disposal from households and institutions
1990
Gunn, I.W. (Auckland Univ., Auckland (New Zealand))
Many existing conventional septic tank soakage trench systems in tight soils "fail" where failure is exhibited by surface saturation of the topsoil and stimulation of grass growth by effluent nutrients spreading via downslope seepage from individual trenches. Modern designs for on-site disposal of domestic wastewater via soakage systems harness the evapo-transpiration seepage (ETS) characteristics of such "failure" to achieve satisfactory year round disposal of affluent in difficult soil and site conditions. A range of alternative design approaches are now available to facilitate on-site effluent disposal for rural residential development using evapo-transpiration assist in conjunction with infiltration seepage
