The floating rice area in Kampuchea has decreased from 390,000 ha in 1970 to 120,000 ha at present because of abandonment of land by farmers during the 1970-75 war, and dislocation of the population and suppression of floating rice production from 1975 to 1979. Many local varieties were lost. Restoration of rice production in deepwater areas will depend on finding the means by which farmers can clear and plow the land that has returned to brush, and on finding varieties suited to deep and rapid flooding. Thai and Vietnamese varieties are being tested, and Kampuchean rices that were stored at the International Rice Research Institute are being reintroduced.
