Habiganj Aman (HA)2, HA-4, BR224-2-5, and BR308-B-2-4 were grown for 30 and 60 d and then submerged, first in 150 cm water and subsequently in 200 cm, in different sets as soon as the plants emerged. In most cases, 60-d-old seedlings emerged most rapidly. At the deepest submergence, HA-2 did not emerge, but 60-d-old seedlings of HA-4 and BR308-B-2-4 emerged. HA-4 and BR308-B-2-4 were thus submergence tolerant at older seedling age. Both 30-and 60-d-old seedlings af BR224-2-B-2-5 emerged at 310 cm, indicating its greater adaptability than the other varieties. Internode number and final internode length increased with increase in submergence depth in all varieties, but more conspicuously in BR244-2B-2-5 and BR308-B-2-4 than in HA-2 or HA-4.
