Growth and yield components of deepwater rice varieties and advanced lines

Eighty-seven deepwater rice varieties and advanced breeding lines grown for 30 d without flooding produced 0-4 elongated internodes/tiller. At 10 to 20d after flooding, varieties and lines with more initial internodes had shorter leaf sheath but longer leaf blades and internodes. Upon flooding, younger internodes elongated faster and the 5th internode began to elongate only after 20d. The number of initial internodes produced before flooding had no relationship to the production of basal tillers per hill or leaf area per tiller. Varieties having a larger number of initial internodes were associated with higher percentage af basal tiller survival after flooding with 1.5 m water, and with greater panicle weight. Data from 11 selected varieties and line revealed that total internode length continued to increase up to 90 d after flooding. The number of basal tillers per hill began to diminish from 30 d after the flooding and reached the minimum at 90 d. Simultaneously, the nodal tillers per hill began to increase, reaching maximum at 90 d after flooding, but then diminished, indicating that some could not produce panicles.
