Performance of snap bean as influenced by seeds from different plant portions and pod maturing stages
1989
Kudan, S.L.
Seeds from pods harvested dry had higher vigor as shown by their early emergence with significantly higher normal and lower abnormal seedlings and higher percentage of germination than the other treatments. Seeds from green manure pods had the lowest vigor with the most abnormal seedlings and the least percentage of germination. Plant height, percentage of pod set and average length of pods did not differ among plants from the various seed maturity stages. Seeds harvested when approaching maturity produced the least lateral branches and had the shortest period to petal break. Seeds from yellowish and dry pod stages had similar number of pods per plant and per plot, number of seeds per pod, weight of marketable and non-marketable pods, yield per plant, yield per plot and computed yield per hectare. Those from pods at the color break stage showed significantly lower weight of marketable pods per plot, number of pods per plot, total yield per plot and computed yield per hectare. Seeds from green manure pod produced the lowest yield. Significant interaction effects between plant portions and maturity stages were indicated in seed vigor and percentage germination where seeds from the top portion germinated earlier and with high percentage of normal seedlings at the yellowish and dry pod stages. Similarly, top portion effected the lowest abnormal seedlings at dry pod stage while the base portion enhanced the highest percentage of germination at the dry pod stage. There was significant positive correlation between final germination number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plot and the total yield per plot.
