Survey of weeds in upland taro cropping systems: an integrated approach in weed control

An analysis of survey data for application within an integrated long-term approach to weed control is presented. The study was carried out in small-scale upland taro cropping systems in Western Samoa. Records on weeds and attendant aspects (site and cropping/farming system) were collected during 1983/84 and 1984/85 wet seasons. The countrywide survey across climatic zones enabled the characterization of the present cropping systems (changing from shifting cultivation to more sedentary cropping) and weed composition. The importance of individual agronomic practices (length of fallow period, soil cultivation, spacing, handweeding versus chemical control and mulching) on the quality and quantity of weeds, as well as on possible future changes, are discussed. By comparing field experiments and literature with the survey data, an outlook on yield losses and the dynamics of taro cropping is given. Alternative control measures were evaluated under the given socio-economic conditions.
