Rice database: growth and yield characteristics of recent rice cultivars

Accurate, accessible basic information is vital to an efficient and relevant research endeavor. More so if the strategy is to build up on current high yields. The Plant Physiology Department [of the International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] initiated and developed a compilation of baseline information on primary physiological attributes of rice-growth, nitrogen economy, energy economy, and yield characteristics of recent high yield cultivars and other selected varieties in response to a given environment and management practices. Eighteen experiments conducted in Los Banos from 1986 to 1988 comprise the initial database. These experiments cover varietal and seasonal performances interactive with cultural practices and environmental factors. Every experiment is presented in a simple format consisting of an abstract, 10 to 11 tables, and 3 to 4 figures. The corner stone of this database is the improved seedling management and upgraded sampling procedures designed to minimize errors below 10%. Methodology on energy balance analysis is also presented and is utilized and evaluated in later experiments to reinforce the growth analysis. Primary data on rice growth and yield characteristics would principally serve to fill the present gap of information needed to assess yield constraints and to identify critical areas for a new yield plateau, to preserve information on cultivars lost to pests and diseases, to test and verify rice models, and to support breeding programs. This database is envisioned to be a continuing endeavor designed to update and disseminate primary information on rice production and to be linked with other relevant databases.
