Social structure and social organization in the bank vole [Clethrionomys glareolus]

Bujalska, G. (Polska Akademia Nauk, Dziekanow Lesny (Poland). Instytut Ekologii)
Literature enriched with the present author's own and yet unpublished data was used to create the following picture of the basic unit of social organization. A few up to 7 mature (i.e., territorial) females of neighbouring home ranges and up to 6 mature males inhabit the same space and together constitute a breeding colony. Young of the year usually remain within the area occupied by the colony. The outlined social system consisting of breeding colonies probably excludes the possibility of application of the density-dependent approach to study population dynamics. Models of the dynamics based on interactions between the neighbouring individuals seem to be more appropriate in the case of the bank vole, because of quite intricate social relations between the population members
