[Cytochemical aspects of plant resistance to salinity in vitro]

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Wisconsin 38) cell lines adapted to grow in media with varying concentrations of NaCl: 10 g/l (S10) and 25 g/l (S25) were studied. Unadapted cells (wild line - S0) were used as a control material. Tolerance of cultured cell to moderate (10 g/l) level of NaCl results from a totally reversible adaptation, whereas tolerance to high (25 g/l) NaCl level results from both reversible adaptation and a stable (for at least 100 cell generations), nonreversible phenomenon presumably selection. The comparison of growth characteristics of both adapted and unadapted cell lines has indicated that the above mentioned cell lines differ in many respects
