The rate equivalent to 1000 kg/ha/year of SO2 applied over a 5-year period brought both soils (sandy and loamy) to a state of heavy degradation. It became manifest in the acidity indices rising to critical values and in a disturbance of ionic equilibrium. A sulphur rate not exceeding 250 kg SO2/ha/year applied to soils very poor in native sulphur may be regarded as beneficial with respect to plant requirements for S
