The response of bread wheat to rate and time of nitrogen application
1990
Woldeab, A. (Institute of Agricultural Research, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia))
Three separate experiments were run in 1987 to measure the response of bread wheat yield, gluten and protein levels to different nitrogen rates and times of application. The experiments were conducted at Holetta, Ginchi and Kulumsa under differing soil conditions. The effect of increasing rates of nitrogen on grain yield of wheat was found to be significant only on the vertisol at Ginchi. However, gluten content of wheat increased at Holetta and Ginchi due to increasing N rates and was affected by the time of application. At Ginchi, the protein content of the grain increased with increasing rates of nitrogen, irrespective of time of application. Neither the nitrogen rate nor the time of application was found to affect grain yield significantly at Kulumsa
