Pearls are produced naturally as well as artificially by using culture methods. Natural marine pearl and freshwater pearl are produced mainly in the Gulf of Persia and People Republic of China respectively. In several countries such as Japan, Korea, Philippines, Australia, India and Thailand pearls are cultured. In Thailand, major contribution to the marine pearl production comes from culture, and the main species cultured are Pinctada fucata, P. maxima and Pteria penguin. Freshwater pearl culture was successfully carried out at Kanchanaburi Freshwater Fisheries Station in 1987.
