Combining abilities of maize inbred lines developed from BSS synthesis

The investigation was carried out into combining abilities for grain yield, yield components and other agronomic properties in crosses of inbred lines B37 (BSSSCo) and B84 (BSSSC ) with 20 unrelated inbreds of different genetic origin. Significant differences were found in general combining abilities between lines B37 and B84. Efficiency in the recurrent selection of half sibs on the increased yield BSS synthetic was proved. Certain changes in the degree of dependence and interdependence were found among the investigated properties for crossing with the B84 line in relation to crossing with B37 line although the greatest direct effect on yield in both cases was found for the number of grain rows per ear, number of grains per row and 1000--grain mass.
