The investigation was carried out into the nodulation ability of 49 strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum isolated from chernozem and their effect upon nitrogen content in root and the aboveground part of pea plants. The following can be concluded: the autochthonous strains of R. leguminosarum isolated from chernozem differ according to the nodulation ability and effectiveness. The number of nodules formed by the strains ranges from 12 to 44 per plant. The nodules differ according to the size, colour and place of formation which are significant parameters of effectiveness. Inoculation has a better positive effect upon the nitrogen content in the root, ranging from 1.88 to 2.69%. The nitrogen content in the aboveground part ranges form 2.37 to 4.29%.
