The effect of chronic Se-deficiency on reproductive performance of sows was studied. Thirty eight sows divided into two groups were fed commercial diets without or with Se-supplementation (0.1 mg Se per kg) during pregrancy and lactation. Blood glutathione peroxidase activities in the Se-deficient group remained at approximately the initial (low) levels during pregnancy and lactation. In the Se-supplemented group enzyme activities continuously increased during pregrancy with maximal values at farrowing. During lactation enzyme activities decreased to the initial levels at weaning. Total number and number of liveborn piglets and number of piglets alive at weaning were significantly lower for sows in the Se-deficient group. Average litter weights at birth and weaning were also lower in the Se-deficient group. Our data confirm the essentiality of selenium for reproductive sows.
