Diallel analysis of maize kernel hardness and denting [Zea mays L.]

On the basis of diallel (without reciprocal) crossing of 4x4 parental inbred lines investigated in field conditions, the analysis was carried out into the inheritance character of hardness and denting with grain maize. The following was established: the hardness and denting of grain was conditioned by additive and non-additive action of genes with a predominant role of additive action; the highest value of general combining abilities for grain hardness was with C 103 and L 240 lines and the highest GCA value for denting was with V 312 and B 14 lines; positive value of special combining abilities for grain hardness was with one hybrid only, and for grain denting all hybrid components had a positive SCA value; results of the components of the genetic variance for grain hardness and denting did not correspond with the analysis of the combining abilities probably because of disadvantages of the applied methods; regressive analysis showed that inheritance of grain hardness was partially dominant while inheritance of grain denting was predominant.
