[The content of crude proteins in the aboveground organs of alfalfa depending on the development stage and mowing]
1988
Simovic, M. (Poljoprivredni institut, Titograd (Yugoslavia))
The investigation was carried out into the content of crude proteins in some aboveground organs of alfalfa in different stages of development. The NS "Banat" alfalfa variety was used in the experiment. A tendency of constant decrease of crude protein content was observed in relation to the stages of plant development, especially from the beginning of flowering. The content of crude proteins significantly decreased at the 1st and 2nd coni of leaves due to rapid ageing and necrosis of the leaf tissue. Bottom leaves dried first and fell resulting in significant yield losses. At lodging, these leaves also wilted first. The obtained data indicate the importance of prompt alfalfa mowing. The most suitable time for alfalfa mowing is at the stage of flower bud formation and the occurence of the 1st open flowers.
