The author has chosen a farmers' cooperative in Holland as a model for seed potato production systems in developed countries. In a country like Holland, where (seed) potato production is a major agricultural activity, the organizational structure of farmer's cooperatives has proven to be a successful one, accounting for over 50% of Holland's seed potato exports. Through the cooperative's organizational structure, the member farmer is directly involved in the decision making process and is assured of the sale of his product against the best possible conditions. The liability structure of a cooperative has facilitated credit retention which in turn has enabled cooperatives to diversify into bio-technology, potato processing activities and the production and marketing of high quality consumption potatoes.
