Effect of salinity on growth, leaf pigments, nutrient levels and yield attributes of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Alamgir, A.N.M. | Baset, Q.A. | Acharjee, J.S.
Low level salinity at early growth phase stimulated plant growth, in some cases, but high salinity level at all growth phases inhibited it. Leaf chlorophyll content and its stability index were decreased due to salt treatment. Concentrations of nitrogen and sodium were increased and that of potassium was decreased in plant organs under saline condition. For some growth attributes salinity stress did not induce any differential effect among the high yielding varieties (HYV). For most of the yield attributes performance of IR8 was better than the rest of HYV. On the basis of high K and low Na contents, high chlorophyll stability index and that of the yield attributes under saline condition IR8 was considered to possess high and Sonali low tolerance to salt stress.
