Jute fibres obtained from the plants grown using different doses of nitrogenous fertilizer at the rate of 0 kg N/ha to 120 kg N/ha were analysed for their chemical constituents. It was observed that increasing application upto 120 kg N/ha of nitrogenous fertilizer gradually decreased the hemicellulose content in the fibre. The percentage of decrease before and after the application of 1st dose of nitrogen fertilizer (O kg N/ha-24 kg N/ha) was highly significant. No appreciable changes were observed in other constituents of jute viz. fat and lignin. The paper chromatography of hydrolysates of jute fibre showed the presence of glucose, xylose and galacturonic acid whereas hemicellulose from increasing nitrogen treated jute fibre are composed mainly of glucan and xylan.
