Survey on the health status of jute and rice seeds of farmers of Sadar Upazila, Mymensingh [of Bangladesh]

Health analysis of jute (Corchorus capsularis var. Local.) and rice (Oryza sativa vars. Mala and Pajam) seeds collected from 200 farmers, representing 10 village under five unions of Mymensingh Sadar Upazila reveals that all the seed samples of both the crops were infected by one or more fungal pathogens. The pathogens encountered in jute seeds were - Botryodiplodia theobromae, Colletrotrichum corchori, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium spp. and Macrophomina phaseolina. Of these, C. corchori appeared to be the most predominant, occurring in 65 seed samples out of 80 and as high as 87% seed-borne infection of the pathogen was recorded. Seed-borne fungal pathogens detected in rice seeds were C. lunata, Drechslera oryzae, Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium spp, Phoma sp. and Trichoconis padwickii. Among these, F. moniliforme was found to be the most prevalent occurring in 58 and 59 seed samples of Pajam and Mala, respectively out of 60 each of the two varieties surveyed. As high as 55% seed-borne infection of the pathogen was detected in Mala. Seed-borne infection of the three dangerous pathogens-B. theobromae, C. corchori and M. phaseolina, respectively, responsible for causing black band, anthracnose and stem rot in jute and D. oryzae causing brown spot in rice, were always higher than the recommended national seed health standard fixed for these pathogens. Average germination of most of seed samples for the two crops were below 80% lower than the recommended national germination standard. Introduction of routine health test for rice and jute seeds raised by the farmers has been stressed.
