1990
Zahid, S.J.A. | Jashimuddin, M.
The socio-economic conditions of the rural poor under the two study villages are found to be more or less same. It has been observed that more than 50% of the members of the sample households belong to be age group 0-15 years. Among the respondents, most are illiterate and work as daily labourers. The households of each village have to spend more that 75% of their income for consumption of food and rest for other purposes. In the study year, the villagers received loan mainly from money lenders on high rate of interest ranging from 20% to 80%. Landlessness, population growth and unemployment are the main causes of poverty. Most of the poor families are not conscious of their poverty, though a few of them have taken one or more steps to improve their economic condition. To alleviate their poverty, the respondents need help, cooperation from the government and the agencies concerned to improve their present economic condition.
