Inheritance of grain yield and its attributes in maize (Zea Mays L.) [of India]
1989
Debnath, S.C. | Sarker, K.R.
A ten parent diallel set (excluding reciprocals) of maize inbreds were studied for nature of inheritance of grain yield, ear length, ear diameter, kernel rows per ear, number of kernels per row and 1000 kernel weight. Overdominance presumably governed the inheritance of all characters except 1000 kernel weight in which partial dominance was observed. The degree of dominance of grain yield, kernel rows per ear and 1000 kernel weight was, however, complicated by the presence of non-allelic interaction of genes. Wide genetic diversity was observed among the parents. All traits showed increased value for dominance. Reciprocal recurrent selection, which capitalizes both fixable and non-fixable components, would be most effective in improving grain yield and its attributes in the resulting population from the inbreds.
