[Some shrub species browsed by goats]

A study on the role of shrubs in the daily ration of goats was performed in a representative area of the mediterranean forest. Results confirm that Cistus albidus is the species with the highest dry matter contribution to the ratio in autumn-winter and spring terms (151,7 g and 405,5% g respectively). Cistus ladanifer is especially browsed in summer (418,2 g) and actually provides 72% of total dry matter obtained from shrubs. Although Cistus salvifolius is highly palatable to goats, and their first choice in every season, it contributes little dry matter to the fodder ingested as each mouthful has a low dry matter biomass. Pistacia lentiscus is hardly used, and Pistacia terebinthus, although much palatable in summer, is rare in the area, and for that reason their great alimentary potential can only be suggested
