[Mode of action of monensin in rumen metabolism and on animal performance]

The various results appeared in the literature and discussed in the present work suggest that two levels can be distinguished with respect to Monensin mode of action. The first refers to a primary or basic action through which membrane permeability is altered causing selective advantage to gram negative bacteria which are efficient propionate producers. The second refers to changes in rumen ecology in response to the first level. Effects produced by Monensin can be summarized as follows: a) changes in ruminal VFA molar proportion with an increase in propionate; b) decrease in rumen methane production; c) increase in protein utilization due to decrease protein deamination in rumen proteolysis; d) slight increase in feed digestibility after an adaptation period; e) increase in feed intake on grazing animals, and the reverse on confined animals, producing greater rate of gain and higher feed efficiency, respectively; f) changes in energy metabolism causing a decrease in maintenance requirements; g) earlier sexual maturity in heifers, in response to a greater activity of endocrine system; h) decrease in milk for content and changes in milk yield; i) other beneficial effects on bloat and ketosis incidence and on coccidia control
