The paper contains a quantitative analysis of higher order branching and a simple model of branching patterns in Norway spruce (Picea abies). The number and length of internodal laterals were positively correlated with the length of parental shoot. The shoots were marked by a special numerical code which involved the order of branching, the origin and position of shoot inside the branching pattern. The code specified each shoot and enabled quick sorting operations. Cumulative lenghts both of differently ordered and differently aged shoots together with some calculated rations made it possible to simulate branching patterns in Norway spruce. The distributions of shoot elevation angle, divergence and azimuthal ones were established according to the data measured on the sample branches taken away from a tree crown. Generally, the elevation angle showed decreasing trend towards the higher orders and the more recent shoots. Divergence angle was found independent on the order of branching and showed only a little variation.
