Frost hardiness of grapevine grown under the conditions of air pollution caused by industrial immisions
1991
Hubackova, M. (Vyzkumna Stanice Vinarska, Karlstejn (CSFR))
The aim of this work was to evaluate frost-hardiness of winter grapevine buds from locality exposed to a strong current of harmful industrial immissions from chemical plants and from location exposed to the acid gas concentrations (SO2 and NOx) in air lower by 30-40 per cent. In winter period in 1989 - 1990, in the both locations, we cut away annual, well lignified shoots with buds from the grapevines of the Pinot gri and Riesling cultivars on the 2nd and 19th of January; these cuttings were exposed to frost stresses in the controlled conditions of freezing chambers at the temperature of -17, -20 and -23 degrees C according to a previously described process (Damborska,1978). Frost-hardiness of buds was evaluated on the basis of budding of one-bud cuttings after the frost stresses. The results obtained from six frost stresses showed that the average frost-resistance in both varieties was lower in the locality where the immission was higher. Differences in the frost-hardiness of buds showed up mainly in the second half of January after the frost stress of -23 degrees C.
