Effect of nitrogen fertilization on very early potato variety yield

The yield of very early potato variety was evaluated in 1986-1988 based on the pattern of growth analytical characteristics at different nitrogen application rates (60, 120 and 180 kg per ha). Two very early potato varieties were evaluated. Based on three-year trial results, it may be said that dry matter output increased with rising nitrogen application rate. High yields, however, were obtained when lower rates were applied, especially a rate of 120 kg of N per ha. Leaf area index was positively influenced by nitrogen rate applied. The highest values were obtained after 77 to 83 days of the growing season. High values of leaf area index were obtained, however, also at lower nitrogen application rates. The relative growth rate of the stand and pure performance of assimilation were positively influenced by nitrogen rate applied as well as by a variety used. Economic tuber yield became greater with increasing nitrogen application rate. At the beginning of the physiological ripeness the date of planting the highest yields were obtained. High tuber yields were, however, obtained also at lower nitrogen application, especially at 120 kg of N per ha. Dry matter as well as tuber yield obtained were highly significantly influenced by increasing nitrogen application rate. Regarding economic and ecological reasons, however, mainly a rate up to 120 kg of N per ha may be recommended in the very early potato variety growing. The beginning of the harvest is recommended to be between the 60th and 70th day of the growing season.
