The occurrence of s-triazine herbicide residues was investigated in the food chain of dairy cows (s-triazines - silage - dairy cow - milk - man); the investigation was focused on two basic components of food chain - silage and milk. Feed and milk samples from eight farms have been evaluated since 1983. Triazine herbicides were recovered from the plant and animal material by means of methanol extraction and chloroform re-extraction. Gas chromatography on a CHROM 5 apparatus was used for detection. The results demonstrated the occurrence of s-triazine herbicides in feed and their residues in the food chain. The range of s-triazine herbicides in milk (the source of these residues was silage) was from 0 per cent (minimum occurrence) to 68.726 per cent (maximum occurrence); among these residues atrazine, prometryn, simazine and terbutryn were investigated. The values of s-triazine compounds fluctuated from the zero value to the maximum of 0.095 mg per 1 kg silage and from 0 to 0.033 mg per 1 kg milk. Some results suggest that atrazine was present on an average by 75 per cent in the total amount of s-triazine herbicide residues.
